Niall Devitt of Bloggertone on Marketing Your Blog

(Niall Devitt is part of the driving force behind Bloggertone, a fascinating business blogging community based in Ireland, and is no stranger to social media marketing either. Last week Bloggertone published a tongue-in-cheek post on blogging‘s demise by community member Anne Perez. Below, Niall talks about seeing blogging as a genre of social media and how social media can be used to market your business blog.)

Hi Niall. Thanks so much for talking with us. Could you tell us a bit more about your business?

I help businesses to grow their sales and customer base. My work includes many different tasks from defining a value proposition, hiring and training sales professionals and advising companies on how to best leverage the Internet and social media to generate new leads.

I know you are heavily involved in Bloggertone. Could you tell us a bit more about the site and any other online projects?

Bloggertone is a business blogging community, a place where professionals can network and promote what they do. Initially, it was just a small Irish community but through the relationships that we have built with sites and communities such as BizSugar.com, it has now grown to become an international business blog in its own right.

I also run Social Media Ireland and Sales Leadership Ireland, two other successful online communities that help ensure my personal brand and profile is continually out there in the right way. Because of these communities and the resulting relationships, I am now getting to work on some other really exciting projects, so watch this space 🙂

In addition to BizSugar.com, how else do you use social media to market content online, particularly for business but in other areas as well?

We also use Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and YouTube. All of our channels help deliver traffic to the site. Bloggertone’s USP is the strength of our community and in essence we merely facilitate our community so that they can promote one another.

We also like to offer unique opportunities such as Sugartone, run in conjunction with Bizsugar – which is a business blogging competition and eBook. We’ve also just launched Bloggertone.TV where our bloggers have interviewed some well known international business personalities, including, of course, the wonderful Anita Campbell 🙂

Do you see the impact of social media decreasing the popularity and usefulness of blogs or other more content driven forms online or is it more complementary?

Some people see social media as replacing blogging, but I prefer to think of blogging as a social media in its own right. I believe that, if anything, tools will lead to an increase in number of people and businesses who blog. I’ve always looked at blogging as conversational in its nature. I think it’s important for content creators to realise that people will interact with content across the various social media platforms, so you need to ensure that you are there and engaging.

How do you think businesses should be using social media today and where do you think that use is headed in the future?

Social media can be used in so many creative and useful ways; each business can be entirely unique in how they approach it. We’ve never had such a direct and instant route to our customers before, so those companies that include customers in an authentic way will gain the most in my opinion. I think the importance of these tools will increase further over time and will continue to change the very nature of how we do businesses.

Anything else to add?

Yes, I would just like to thank you Shawn, Anita, and the entire Bizsugar team for your continued support and guidance. Bizsugar is a fantastic businesses resource for the small business community and I would strongly recommend that people sign up to be part this super community.

  • Hi Shawn & Niall – I’m a fairly new blogger at Bloggertone and the support that Niall and the team give to us bloggers is amazing! Niall comments on every post in a really insightful way. He has always clearly read and understood the posts and he chips in additional thoughts, asks a question or might even suggest a future post angle on the topic. He never simply comments “Great post”, he puts effort and thought into the answer and I just want to say to Niall on a personal level, thank you it’s much appreciated! Apart from being motivational, comments from Niall and the others really add depth and value to the posts, and their active commenting have certainly contributed to the success of Bloggertone. Keep up the good work! ~ Helen

    • Wow Helen, thanks so much for the wonderful comment! And in a way, it proves the potential of social media. We’ve yet to meet (we need to fix that by the way), yet you had the power to make me smile this wet evening in Ireland. Who said that online connections never lead to real relationships, watch this space!

  • Millions of people are using these websites, and you could be reaching out to many of these people by doing a good portion of your marketing through social media. Just think about how much you could be doing, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money when you use this type of marketing, so you can be doing a lot.
