Dr. Shannon Reece: Empowering Women In Small Biz

Meet Dr. Shannon Reece, most recent BizSugar “Contributor of the Week” on Facebook.

We’ll be picking a new “Contributor of the Week” from our Facebook fans tomorrow, so be sure to drop by and “like” us if you haven’t already.

Shannon developed her small business niche by sticking to what she knows.

“I am a sport psychologist, turned business adviser for women,” Shannon said in a recent e-mail interview. “Why? Because I’m a woman, a former competitive athlete, and I know what it’s like to ‘work for the man.’ Training athletes is great. But teaching women how to leverage their gifts into championship form is life changing!”

So how does she define the need in her market?

“Women face different challenges in the business arena than men, and success isn’t about conforming to the status quo,” Shannon explained. “I can’t imagine anything more rewarding than supporting women to courageously embrace entrepreneurship and create sustainable businesses. The greatest lesson they learn is how to achieve success in business without sacrificing themselves in the process. For women (and men), it’s not about having it all, it’s about having the life you love.”

Shannon said she decided to use her own experience to address the issue.

“Being a woman entrepreneur, I understand the unique challenges that women face in business,” she said. “A few years ago, I decided it was time to move from the athletic to the business arena, leveraging my peak performance expertise to train women how to be competitive in a man’s business world. This is by far the most exciting adventure of my life, and fuels my passion each and every day.”

Along the way, she’s used a variety of tools and we’re proud to say BizSugar has been among them.

Carving a niche in the business advice arena is no easy task, and BizSugar has been a huge asset, enabling me to share my vision for women in a big way across the web,” said Shannon. “Not only is it a great forum on which I can post my business articles, but a valuable source of rich content, that enables me to be more effective as a business advisor. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being an active contributor to and digester of BizSugar content is identifying and networking with like-minded entrepreneurs who are striving to serve the world in a big way. Thanks BizSugar!”

  • My favorite line is “The greatest lesson they learn is how to achieve success in business without sacrificing themselves in the process. For women (and men), it’s not about having it all, it’s about having the life you love.””

    Great post!

  • Shannon,

I love what you’re doing to empower women in small business and help them build sustainable businesses. This is an area of focus for me as well, especially in helping women build green businesses. Women in particular have an important role to play in this area.
