Martina Iring @martinairing Dumps Desk Job for Dream

It’s a popular fantasy. After working that same old soul sucking job for year after year, one day 9-to-5ers simply decide enough is enough!

They turn in their resignations, strike out on their own, and finally achieve the success and satisfaction they’ve always hoped for working for themselves.

Well, in marketing consultant Martina Iring’s case, this turned out to be much more than just some idle dream. It has become her reality.

“My entrepreneurial adventure started rather abruptly,” Iring recalls. “I didn’t plan it for years. It wasn’t something I had dreamed about since I was a child. But the thought of  ‘wouldn’t it be awesome to work from home and put my marketing skills to good use helping others’ definitely was floating around my head before I took the plunge…”

In Iring’s case, that plunge was from the end of a particularly unpleasant desk job. And one day, she knew the time had come.

“I was extremely unhappy at the last marketing desk job I had,” Iring says. “I was looking for other opportunities, but the right one just wasn’t coming along. And the job I had became more and more unbearable until it finally gave me the courage to take the step I had always feared. If I couldn’t find the ideal job; it was time to create it.”

A month later, Iring had quit her job and begun her business as an independent Internet marketer and copywriter.

“My focus on working with small businesses and entrepreneurs was a natural choice,” she says. “I’ve always been a small business cheerleader. I’ve always believed that small businesses are part of a better world.”

But Iring also quickly realized that not every small business owner could afford her services, even if they saw their value, and that some entrepreneurs also simply preferred to do things on their own. To meet this need too, Iring launched her blog, Small Business Bliss, to share her knowledge and experience with an even broader audience.

“I wanted to create a place where small business owners can feel comfortable knowing that the information is meant just for them—there is just so much info online that’s really not suitable for the small business crowd,” she explains.

Blogging also gave Iring the opportunity to talk about the entrepreneurial journey and to share with others from her own personal experiences the joy of operating a small business she herself has found.

Along the way, Iring has also found other tools to help her learn more about business and marketing while sharing her own message with small business owners and entrepreneurs.

I came across Biz Sugar via Small Business Trends, a site that I read religiously,” Iring recalls. “As soon as I visited the site, I knew that this was the place for me. Not only would it give me a great avenue for sharing my blog posts with exactly who I am writing for—the small business owner— it also offered a great opportunity to meet others also interested in small biz.”

Over the last few years, Iring has made considerable use of the BizSugar community both for its resources and for its opportunities to connect.

“Thanks to Biz Sugar, I have found plenty of great resources and sites that I probably would not have come across otherwise,” Iring adds. “It’s really awesome to be a part of a community that lives and breathes small business.”
