How can your small business “insure” success? Ryan Hanley, our latest BizSugar contributor of the week, can answer that question from at least two perspectives.
“I wear two hats,” says Hanley.
By day, Hanley is a certified insurance counselor for the The Murray Group, an independently owned insurance and financial services firm, located in Albany, NY. By night, he writes about small business marketing success online in his blog, Theory in Success Online, located at www.RyanHanley.com.
“My primary source of revenue from this blog is speaking engagements where I discuss the techniques and philosophy behind successfully marketing a small business online,” Hanley explains.
He says the blogging and speaking allow him to combine his two worlds in a business that utilizes the best of both.
“It’s my job within the agency to produce new business using traditional insurance sales techniques as well as harnessing The Murray Group’s website and social media presence,” Hanley explains.
He says he takes the material for both his blog and his presentations directly from his experiences promoting The Murray Group’s social presence, so all the techniques he suggests to others are ones he has tried himself.
“This allows me to use real results as well as talk from firsthand experience in implementation and execution,” he says.
In addition to writing for The Murray Group and his blog, Hanley also contributes to Basic Blog Tips, Traffic Generation Café, Small Business Trends, and Property Casualty 360, an insurance trade magazine.
Hanley, also finds another common denominator between his two worlds.
“I use Bizsugar as the primary distribution tool for both ventures,” he says. “Bizsugar allows me to quickly get relevant content in front of individuals with an interest in small business matters. My exact target market.”
However, after using BizSugar for two years now, Hanley says he’s discovered even an more important value to the site.
“After delving into the articles submitted by other community members, I’ve found many extremely useful resources to help my own businesses,” he says. “In addition, I’ve built some strong relationships with other community members with similar interests to my own.”

Hi Tom, awesome curated list. Some really good blogs on there, a few I read, but many that I don’t. This has given me the inspiration to produce a list of my own, albeit on a different subject matter.
